Hair Care Foundations 101
Module 4 — What Breaks Hair
Lesson 8 / 12 · 8 min

Chemical and Environmental Damage

Color, relaxers, sun, and water can all weaken hair without you noticing.

Chemical treatments

Color, bleaching, relaxers, and perms all work by opening the cuticle and altering the cortex. They can give beautiful results, but they weaken the structure because they break some of the protein bonds that give hair its strength. Chemically treated hair needs more care: more moisture, more protection, less heat, and regular protein treatments to strengthen what remains.

The most important rule: do not stack two aggressions. Do not color and relax at the same time, and do not put high heat on freshly treated hair.

Sun, sea water, and pool water

Strong sun can bleach and dry hair. Salt in sea water pulls water out of the strand, and chlorine in pools can make it brittle and change its color. These are environmental damage.

How to protect: wet your hair with clean water before entering the sea or pool (hair already full of water absorbs less salt or chlorine), apply a conditioner as a protective coat, and cover your head in strong sun. Rinse with clean water afterward.

Signs of damaged hair

Learn to recognize the signs: split ends, hair that tangles easily, dryness that will not go away even after moisturizing, hair that stretches too far and snaps (too little protein), or hair that feels hard and breaks cleanly (too much protein, not enough water). These signs tell you what your hair needs — we will balance that in the next module.

Key takeaways

  • Chemical treatments weaken hair — do not stack two aggressions and add more care.
  • Sun, sea water, and chlorine dry hair; wet and protect before, rinse after.
  • Learn to read damage signs: splits, tangling, dryness, too much or too little protein.
