The Follicle and Scalp: Where Hair Is Made

Hair grows from a living root beneath the scalp. A healthy scalp means healthy hair.

The follicle — the hair's garden

Every strand grows from a tiny pocket beneath the scalp called a follicle. At the base of the follicle is a living root (called the papilla) that receives blood, oxygen, and nutrients. This is where real growth happens. The part of the hair outside is the result of work done below.

That is why we compare hair to a plant: what you see above depends on the health of the root below. If you want longer hair, you cannot pull it — you must care for the garden.

The oil gland and sebum

Every follicle has a small gland attached that produces sebum — hair's natural oil. Sebum travels down the length of the strand and protects it. But on coily or curly hair, sebum struggles to reach the ends, because it has to follow every bend. That is why coily hair is often drier at the ends — it is not a flaw, it is simply how it is built, and it is why added oil and moisture help so much.

A healthy scalp makes healthy hair

The scalp is the soil where hair grows. If it is clogged with product buildup, too dry, or irritated, growth suffers. Keep the scalp clean, well-circulated (a gentle massage helps blood flow), and balanced — not too oily, not too dry. In Module 5 we show how scalp care fits into a routine.

Key takeaways

  • Hair grows from a living root (follicle) beneath the scalp.
  • Sebum struggles to reach the ends of coily hair — that is why they are drier.
  • A clean, balanced scalp is the foundation of hair growth.
