Porosity: The Key to Choosing the Right Care
Porosity is your hair's ability to absorb and hold water. It changes your whole routine.
What porosity is
Porosity is how your hair absorbs and holds water. It depends on how the cuticle scales lie.
Low porosity — the cuticles are sealed tightly flat. Water struggles to get in, but once it does, the hair holds it well. This hair can take time to get wet, and products may sit on top of it.
Normal porosity — the cuticles are balanced. Hair absorbs and holds water well. It is the easiest to maintain.
High porosity — the cuticles are lifted or have gaps. Water gets in easily but also leaves easily, so the hair dries fast. Often the result of damage (heat, chemicals) or genetics.
Why it matters
Your porosity decides which products will work for you. Low-porosity hair prefers lighter products and a little gentle warmth (like a warm cap) to help water get in. High-porosity hair prefers richer, creamier products and oils that seal water in, plus protein treatments to close the gaps in the cuticles.
That is why we do not sell the same thing to everyone. Choosing products without knowing your porosity is like buying shoes without knowing your size.
Find out your porosity
You can do a first test at home: place a clean strand (no product) in a glass of water. If it floats, your porosity tends to be low. If it sinks slowly, it is normal. If it sinks quickly, it is high. (This test gives an idea, not an exact result.)
