Module 3 — How Hair Grows
Lesson 6 / 12 · 8 min

Growth Speed and What Affects It

Hair grows about a centimeter a month. Your diet and health matter more than products.

How fast hair actually grows

On average, hair grows about 1 centimeter (half an inch) a month — roughly 12 to 15 centimeters a year. No product can make the follicle grow faster than its genetic capacity. What a good routine does is prevent breakage, so the hair that grows stays on your head instead of snapping off. That is how length works: it is not just growth, it is growth minus breakage.

From the inside: diet and health

Because the root is alive and feeds on blood, what you put in your body matters. Protein (hair is protein), iron, zinc, and vitamins like biotin and vitamin D all play a role. Drinking enough water helps too. Severe stress, illness, childbirth, or rapid weight loss can push many follicles into the telogen phase at once — causing heavier shedding called telogen effluvium, which often resolves on its own after a few months.

That is why we always begin with a consultation: sometimes what shows on your head starts inside your body.

What is not true

Trimming the ends does not make hair grow faster — growth happens at the root, not the ends. But trimming split ends stops the split from traveling up and breaking more hair, so it helps you keep length. Likewise, there is no "miracle" product that doubles growth overnight. The method that works has no secret: understand your hair, protect it, and stay consistent.

Key takeaways

  • Hair grows about 1 cm a month — no product can change genetic capacity.
  • Length = growth minus breakage; protect hair to keep length.
  • Diet, health, and stress affect growth from inside the body.
