Hair Care Foundations 101
Module 5 — What Hair Needs
Lesson 9 / 12 · 9 min

The Moisture-Protein Balance

Healthy hair needs both: water for flexibility, protein for strength. Too much of either breaks it.

Two needs that work together

Remember from Module 1: hair is protein that needs water. That is why hair care has two main parts:

Moisture (water) — makes hair flexible so it can bend without breaking. Moisturizing products are water-based, and oils help seal that water inside.

Protein — strengthens the structure when the cuticle is chipping. Protein treatments fill the gaps where protein is missing.

You need both. Hair with only water but no strength will stretch and snap. Hair with only protein but no water will turn hard and break. The secret is balance.

How to know what your hair is missing

Do a simple test: take a wet strand and stretch it gently.

If it stretches a lot and does not return — or breaks easily while stretching — it lacks protein.

If it snaps right away without stretching, and feels hard and dry — it lacks moisture (water).

If it stretches a little and returns without breaking — it is balanced. That is what we want.

Use this test to decide which treatment to give your hair. Do not guess — listen to your hair.

Key takeaways

  • Hair needs moisture (water, flexibility) AND protein (strength) — both, in balance.
  • Too much water = limp hair that stretches and snaps; too much protein = hard hair that breaks.
  • The wet-strand stretch test tells you what your hair is missing.
